There IS no plan!

Meal planning? There’s no plan. I do most of my shopping on Sunday, then on the weekdays I open the fridge at around 3 p.m. and figure out what I’ll make. My son likes very specific food as far as what he brings to school, so I just buy the same things and don’t have to plan much for that.

School lunch: Brown bag or lunch box?

We use washable cloth bags

My daughter will be going into middle school soon and I have packed a lunch for her every single day since she started kindergarten. At first I used to pack a brown bag (okay, it was largely for the nostalgia factor), but pretty soon I realized how much trash we were generating, not to mention the expense of constantly having to buy “lunch supplies.” So a few years ago I bought her a wipeable, washable cloth insulated lunch bag. It even came with several matching pouches to put all her lunch items in. I don’t have to worry about running out to buy bags and they are so easy to clean! Each one seems to last about a year and a half, so it pretty much pays for itself. You can find one at any major store, but I buy mine in discount stores for much less.

What’s your go-to kids’ school lunch?

My kids get either cheese or Nutella

My go-to school lunch is one of two things. It’s either a plain cheese sandwich on a sandwich thin (those 100 calorie bread options) without any condiments. Or it’s Nutella. I know. I know. Nutella isn’t the best option. But one of my children doesn’t like peanut butter and one of them doesn’t like jelly. So, where does that leave me?! Confused, that’s where. I tried for a very long time to get them to eat cold cuts – but that didn’t work out. And don’t get me started on homemade soup. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. We just stopped fighting it.

How do you deal with picky eaters?

Dinner is dinner…

I have the pickiest eaters on the planet! I don’t really test their limits either. If I give them grilled chicken too many days in a row, they practically have a melt-down. I deal with it by making them understand that dinner is dinner… and if they don’t like it, then they don’t have to eat it. But mom is not cooking them up a second meal. I don’t understand moms who make everyone something special. I don’t have the capacity for that! My kids understand this rule and sometimes they choose to go to bed without dinner! And you know what? That’s OK!

Fruit is a big favorite…

Does your family go through ‘snack phases’ like mine does? When it’s hot, we always, ALWAYS have a freezer full of popsicles. Now that it’s a bit colder (yes, even here in southern California), we are loving air-popped popcorn, string cheese and sliced apples. Of course, anytime there’s a holiday like Valentine’s Day or Easter, there’s the candy that goes along with that, but mostly we ALL enjoy snacks we can grab and go. Fruit is a big favorite around here, we’re lucky we have access to a variety of fruit all year long. Whatever’s seasonal is always a hit.
